In the name of God Amen I John Williams being nether sicke in body nor troubled in minde I praise and glorifie god therefore doe make and ordaine this ensueing writeing to be my last will and testamente And first I humbly pray Almighty god in the fulnes of his mercy to receive my soule into his eternall glory which was soe deerely redeemed by the effusion of his most pretious blood of my blessed Saviour Jesus Christ and my body I desire may be comitted to the earth at the discretion of my executors there to rest untill the ioyfull day of resurrection when all both good and badd shall appeare before that greate and most holy Tribunall of our most mercifull Judge And concerning my worldly estate which it hath pleased god to bestow upon me I dispose of as followeth
And first I give and bequeath unto my most endeared and faithfull wife Edith my free howses and Land lyeing and being within the Towne Feildes and boundes of Rampton in the County of Cambridge And also one full coppiehold scituate in Cottenham in the County aforesaid wherein I lately dwelt and is in the tenure of Humfrey Barnardeston gent to dispose of as shee shall thinke good dureing her naturall life together with all my howsholdstuffe of what kinde soever remaineing in the same howse or else where to dispose of likewise at her wish and pleasure And after her decease I doe give and bequeath unto my eldest sonne John and to his heires the same full coppiehold And one other full coppiehold called Greenes now in the tenure of one John Chapman together with all my other Lande and Leases lyeing and being within the feildes and bounds of Cottenham aforesaid Upon condition neverthelesse that he my said sonne John his heires executors and assignes shall release unto my sonne George and his heires all the right title and interrest which hee hath or may have to all or any of my freehold Land in Rampton aforesaid which if he doth refuse to doe Then I doe will and bequeath the premisses aforementioned all unto George my sonne and to his heires for ever And pay also unto my said wife his mother yearely dureing her life the sume of tenn pounds of lawfull mony of England at or on the feast day of the nativitie of our blessed Saviour comonly called Christmas wheresoever shee shalbe or reside in England or Wales and in default or Denyall of payment of the said tenn poundes yearely in forme aforesaid I doe hereby will ordaine and make it lawfull for the said Edith my loveing wife by her selfe or her assignes to enter into and upon all the said premisses and the same to hold and inioy dureing her life Provided notwithstanding that in case shee shall happen to marry after my decease then my will is that neither her then husband nor her selfe shall have power to enter upon or intermeddle with any of the said premisses nor shall receive or hand the said tenn poundes paid her yearely unless my said sonne John his heires or assignes shall of his or their owne good will give it her And further in regard of this my large guift unto my said beloved wife my hope desire and will is that shee shall and will pay unto Edith Jeffery my Grandchild the sume of two hundred pounds of good and lawfull mony of England at or on the twenty fifth day of June which shalbe in the yeare of our Lord 1661 if the said Edith Jeffery be then liveing but if shee be then dead I hope and make not question but her daughter Paradise Jeffery mother of the said Edith Jeffery will forgive and release her of the said payment of two hundred pounds aswell in regard I gave her soe greate and double a portion above her sisteres as also that I gave her a hundred pounds that her husband should have, nay had, paid at london seaven yeares since when I brought it back againe and delivered it her, which shee hath ever since and still enioyeth And further I give and bequeath unto George my sonne and to his heires All my coppiehold Land and freehold Land lyeing and being within the Feilds and bounds of Rampton aforesaid To enioy all my Coppiehold Land there presently after my decease And all my freehold land there imediatly after his mothers decease Also I give and bequeath unto every of my daughters twenty shillings a peice to make them ringes And to every one of my grandchilren tenn shillings a peice for a memoriall that I loved and prayed for them dayly that god would endew them with his grace and guide them by his holy spirit Provided that if either of my said sonnes depart this life without lawfull issue Then my will is that the Survivor shall have and inioy all the deceasedes part performeing the conditions aforesaid And if it shall happen both of them to dye and departe this life without issue lawfull Then my will is that Edith my deere wife shall inioy all the premisses dureing her life And after her decease my will is that is shalbe equally devided betweene my three daughters if they bee then liveing and if any of them be then dead then my will is that soe much as would have fallen to her share shalbe equally subdevided amongst the Children of her or them so deceased And lastly I doe earnestly request and fully ordaine and make my loveing brother in law Richard Pepys Esqr my sole Executor of this my last will and testament in hope of which his paines takeing I doe now give him my greate mare and stoned coult which is all the quickbeasts I have In wittnes whereof I have hereunto putt my hand and seale the first day of May 1651 Jo Williams Paradise Jefferys
This will was proved at London the ninth day of February in the yeare of our Lord God according to the Computation of the Church of England one thousand six hundred Fifty one before Sr Nathaniel Brent knight Doctor of Laws Master or Keeper of the Prerogative Court by the oath of Richard Pepys Esqr the executor named in the said will to whom was comitted administration of all and singular the goods chattells and debts of the said Deceased he being first by vertue of a Comission legally sworne well and truly to administer the same Exr
