Obituary
GERTRUDE LADY AGNEW
Gertrude Lady Agnew, who died, after a long illness, at 44, Upper Grosvenor-street, W., on Sunday, was the daughter of the Hon. Gowran Vernon, son of Lord Lyveden, of Northamptonshire. She married in 1889 Sir Andrew Noel Agnew, ninth baronet of Lochnaw, who died in 1928. Many will remember the entertainments which she gave at her house in Smith-square, Westminster, her hospitality, and the charm and variety of her gifts as a hostess. Her portrait, which was painted by Sargent, was one of his most brilliant successes, and it is now in the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. She was a great-great-niece of Sydney Smith, and possessed in no small degree the swiftness of his understanding, his humour, and his power of repartee. She had a wide knowledge of furniture and domestic architecture of all periods, and this she employed in the restoration and furnishing of old houses. She was an excellent conversationalist, and enjoyed good argument. Her large heart and wide sympathies gained her many friends among both the young and the old. Those who were privileged to know her well found her a true, staunch, and understanding friend.
