    • May Davis appears to have been fostered by Richard and Mary Orton. She was living with them in the 1891 census when she was 7 and, ten years later, in the 1901 census, she was in service but was named May Orton. There is a possibility that Richard Orton was in fact May's father, although this supposition is based on the most circumstantial of evidence. In 1881, May's mother was working as a confectioner's assistant in Rotherham. At the same time, Richard Orton was a confectioner in Rotherham. Perhaps Miriam worked for Richard and one thing led to another...
