  • Notes 
    • In the 1881 census, an Edwin and Mary Bennett appear living at Ivy Cottage, 26 Willow Walk, Tottenham, Middlesex, aged 50 and 48 respectively. Edwin was a bricklayer, born in Lambeth, Surrey and Mary was born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire.

      The Tottenham address links with the Tottenham birthplace of the younger Edwin Bennet, who was born there in about 1854. There is no sign of this couple in previous censuses. The age of the wife matches with that of Mary Bennett née Whitcroft, but the birthplace is slightly out. Hatfield is about five miles from Wheathampstead - but could have been mentioned because it is a bigger place and more likely to be known outside Hertfordshire.

      But Mary did say she was a widow in the 1871 census...
