    • He entered the Royal Navy in 1805, became a Captain on 7 December 1818 and Admiral on 23 March 1863. He served as a midshipman on the Orion at the Battle of Trafalgar, aged just 11. He also served in the Egyptian Expedition, at the capture of Alexandria, the attack on Rosetta and the destruction of the French fleet of Cette. On 31 October 1809, he took part in the successful capture of a French convoy in the Bay of Rosas. He served as Lieutenant on HMS Tenedos in the American war of 1814, at the capture of the John Adams and the President (mentioned in dispatches). He commanded the Infernal at the bombardment of Algiers on 27 August 1816.
