    • He was sued for damages by a fellow farmer named Arnold from Lamberhurst. This was probably the Arthur Arnold who was listed in the 1871 census as an unmarried farmer living at Mill Place in Lamberhurst with his sister and niece.

The grievance arose from an alleged assault at a cricket match in Lamberhurst in July 1876. Mr Lansdell called Mr Arnold a "counterfeit" and Mr Arnold then made "satirical allusions to the defendant's method of farming". He also accused Mr Lansdell "of having acted dishonourably in not playing in a cricket-match a short time previously" and "touched on a domestic matter nearly affecting the defendant". A "sharp skirmish ensued" but Mr Lansdell explained that he had only "tapped the plaintiff on his hat, which caused it to fall over his eyes, and had shaken his fist at him". He paid £1 into court as compensation for the plaintiff and the jury found in Mr Lansdell's favour.

Supreme Court of Judicature, Dec. 8: Third Court (Sittings at Guildhall, before Mr. Justice Hawkins and a Common Jury)
      ARNOLD v. LANSDELL.
Mr. Waddy, Q.C., and Mr. Macdonald appeared for the plaintiff; Mr. Willis, Q.C., and Mr. Stone for the defendant.
This was an action for an assault, alleged to have been committed by the defendant upon the plaintiff at a cricket-match, in July, 1876. Both the parties were farmers at Lamberhurst, in Kent, and on the afternoon of the day in question were present at a cricket-match then being played in that village. Being acquaintances, they shook hands on meeting, and conversed amicably for some time on the match and other topics, until a discussion arose which led to high words between them, and the defendant called the plaintiff a "counterfeit". This was followed by satirical allusions to the defendant's method of farming, and he was accused by the other of having acted dishonourably in not playing in a cricket-match a short time previously. The plaintiff then touched on a domestic matter nearly affecting the defendant, when a sharp skirmish ensued, in which the plaintiff complained that he was roughly used, and brought the action for damages in consequence. The defendant, on the other hand, averred that, though greatly provoked, he had only tapped the plaintiff on his hat, which caused it to fall over his eyes, and had shaken his fist at him. He paid £1 into court, alleging that it was sufficient to compensate the plaintiff for any injury he might have sustained, which view the jury adopted and returned their verdict for the defendant.
