  • Notes
    • From The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, November 4, 1826
      Wednesday's Post
A singular appeal was heard at the Cambridgeshire Quarter Sessions, the contending parishes being Tuddenham, in Suffolk, and Balsham, in that county. It appeared that 15 years ago, a woman named Susan Dean, living at Balsham, became pregnant by one John Parker, who was forced by the overseers to marry her; but they parted at the Church door in mutual disgust, and it was asserted, had not seen each other from that period until they met in Court on this occasion, the man having ever since resided at Tuddenham, and the woman at Balsham, a distance of 56 miles apart. The latter has for 8 or 9 years cohabited with one William Thorogood, by whom she has three children, and these were the subjects of appeal, in consequence of an order for the removal of the woman and her four children to Tuddenham. The appellants contended that they had no right to be burdened with the children acknowledged as Thorogood's; but the respondents maintained that positive proof must be given that the woman had not been visited by her husband. The Court decided that the three children belonged to Balsham.
