  • Notes
    • On 3 January 1887, William Mongor gave evidence in the Wreck Commissioner's Court regarding the case of the Minerva and the Borderer.

The steamship Minerva had been struck by the Borderer (piloted by William Mongor) and had sunk in the Thames with the loss of seven lives on 28 October 1886. The Minerva left Surrey Commercial Dock with a crew of 23 hands and three stowaways, bound for Sunderland. The Borderer, also a steamship, had encountered the Minerva near Gravesend at about 3.50pm, having left Boston on 16 October bound for London, with a crew of 48 hands, 17 cattlemen, two stowaways, a general cargo and 412 head of cattle. She had taken on the Trinity House pilot at Dungeness. Despite whistling at each other to indicate which course they were taking, the Borderer struck the Minerva on the starboard side, cutting her down to the water's edge. The Minerva sank within two or three minutes. William Mongor was in charge of the Borderer at the time of the collision and the captain, Frederick Manley, considered him to have thought that the Minerva had not heard his signal regarding the course he was taking. Captain Manley commented that he had twice asked the pilot whether it was right to go up the river at full speed during their journey prior to the collision. Mr. L.E. Pyke appeared for the pilot of the Borderer. The case was ongoing.
